Mekong Cruise in Indochina, 17 days - 16 nights

This trip offers a delightful journey along the Mighty Mekong River through South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Nothing is as real and interesting as the typical daily lives and the tropical sounds and sights of the three countries that you can experience in this trip.

Day 1: HCMC 
Arrival in HCMC, the biggest city in Vietnam, airport pick up, hotel check-in.
Free time on your own to explore this city. 

Overnight at a hotel in HCMC 

 

Day 2: HCMC – Cai Be - My Thuan - Sa Dec (B-L-D)
8:30 Transfer from HCMC to Cai Be 

11.00-11h30 boarding LE COCHINCHINE boat. Enjoy welcome drink.

LeCochinchine continues sets sails to Caithia while lunch is served on boat.

Embark on a lovely cycling excursion on the bank of the peninsula browsing several verdant villages. Visit of the gardens and orchards, local houses and ample opportunity meet with people and get insight into Delta life. Visit Caodai temple on the way to Mythuan .

Continue our cruise toward Sadec, a nice and quiet town overlooking Mekong river

Visit the lively Sadec food market and primary school headed by Magueritte Duras. Walks along the village path and get yourself acquaintance with rural activities as farmers farm their fields: rice fields, and vegetable farms, fish farms.

Back to our boat for a cruise down stream. Relax on boat while sipping an aperitif .

Dinner and overnight on board.

 

Day 3: Cai Thia - Vinh Long - Tra On (B-L-D)

Breakfast on board on the Mekong.

Visit Binh Hoa Phuoc island and go for walk walk through the islets, sampling native fruits, viewing local handicraft production and meet the local people.

Transfer to a local boat for an extensive visit of Cai Be: the floating market, the mazes of waterway , local pop-rice and sweets production.

Visit of old houses, delightful flower gardens and local coconut candy and rice paper manufacturers.

LeCochinchine continues its cruise to Cochien. Lunch served on board.

Embark on a pleasant walk on the footpaths of the countryside to discover tropical fruit orchards and the local people's activities. Visit a cottage industry , a local farm and sample seasonal fruits.

Boarding back, complimentary drink as a welcome back on board. Open bar and rest on the deck enjoying the sunset. The crew will serve dinner while the Le Cochinchine is cruising Mang Thit river.

Day 4: Tra On - Can Tho – Tra Su - Chau Doc (B)

Breakfast on board.

The morning bobbling commotion of Mekong river life comes to life for another lovely day our boat set sails to Cantho through tributary and canals.

Transfer to Cairang: one of the most bustling floating markets in Mekong. We go for a walk along the canals and the palm-shaded creek to see local houses and green orchards, ship building yards, rural and water activities in full swing.

Boarding back, with a welcome-back drink.

11 h00 Disembark in Cantho. Meet driver and continue to transfer to Tra Su swamp via Long xuyen city.

Have lunch at a local restaurant in Long Xuyen with local specialty: crocodile meat (not included)

After lunch, continue by small country roads to visit Tra Su swamp. Enjoy the tours by motor boat, rowing boat, on foot. See the birds (many birds can be spotted late in the afternoon, before dark).

18:00 Transfer to Chau Doc, check in the beautiful Sam Mountain Lodge. Have some relaxation

Day 5: Chau Doc – Phnom Penh by boat (B)
7:30  Take an express boat ride from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh along the interesting Mekong river. 

13:00 Arrival in Phnom Penh, meet your guide and enjoy city tour: visit the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, the Toul Sleng Genocidal Museum, the Wat Nom, the independent monument, etc. 

Check in a hotel and rest. 

 

Day 6: Phnom Penh – Siem Reap (B-D)
Morning take an express boat ride Siem Reap via the Tole Sap lake. 
Afternoon: Visit Angkor Wat, seeing the sunset from Phnom Bakheng

Dinner: Apsara show

 

Day 7: Siem Reap (B)
Early rise to admire the sunrise on the Angkow Wat

Full day visit other famous Angkor temples: Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm , Bangtey Srei , Eastern Mebon, Eastern Baray

Overnight at a hotel in Siem Reap 

 

Day 8: Siem Reap – Kongpong Cham (B)
Transfer to Kongpong Cham by road
 Afternoon visit Wat Nokor, Koh Paen Island

Check in a hotel and rest 

 

Day 9: Kongpong Cham – Kratie (B)
Transfer to Kratie by road, visit a rubber plantation on the way
Afternoon boat trip to see Irrawaddy dolphins on the Mekong River

Check in a hotel and rest 

 

Day 10: Kratie – Stung Treng – the border with Laos - Pakse (B)
Transfer from Kratie to Stung Treng and then to the border by boat on the Mekong River. 
Land transfer to Pakse.

Day 11: Vat Phou Cruise -  Champasak - Vat Phou Temple  (B-L-D)

9:30 - 10:00 After meeting at the Sinouk Coffee House in central Pakse, we transfer you to our cruise boat via long tail riverboat, for your 2.5 hour journey to Champassak.

Enjoy lunch aboard

Afternoon visit the Wat Phou Ruins.

As dusk falls, we transfer you back to the Vat Phou boat for a chance to enjoy the tropical sunset on the deck. Dinner is served on board, while the boat docks for the night alongside a remote Laotian village.

 

Day 12:  Houei Thamo - Oum Muong Temple – Khong Island (B-L-D) 

Breakfast is on board as we set sail for the village of Tomo. This is a small village a few minutes walk away from the mysterious hidden forest temple of Oum Muong. Afterwards we rejoin the boat to continue our cruise southwards.

Late afternoon we disembark from the boat to walk through Ban Deua Tia, a small Laotian Village where the traditional way of life has not changed in centuries, you will also visit the local school and share some time with the students.

Our day’s cruise finishes at the most northern tip of Don Khong, the largest inhabited island in the river archipelago. After dinner, the evening is yours to relax and enjoy.

 

 

Day 13:  Don Khone - Pha PHeng Waterfall – Pakse (B-L) 

While you have breakfast on the deck, the Vat Phou boat cruises down the Mekong to the small village of Ban Veuthong, where you board a small boat to meander among the 4,000 Islands to Khone Island. You will visit the old French railway, the French colonial house and walk across the bridge that links Khone and Det Islands.

This afternoon you will visit the Khone PhaPheng waterfalls, the “Niagara of the East”.  After your visit to Phapheng waterfall you will be transferred back to Pakse by bus where the tour will end.

 

Day 14: Pakse – Vientiane (B)
Morning flight to VTE
Afternoon city tour in VTE, start at That Luang, Patuxai, Ta Lat Sao market, and end at Wat Sisaket. From here, take a nice walk along interesting streets of Thanon Setthathirat, Thanon Fa Ngum, Thanon Pang khan etc. and back to the hotel on foot.
 

Day 15: Vientiane – Luang Prabang (LPQ) (B)
Morning Flight to LPQ
City tour on foot to visit Wat Xieng Thong, the National Museum, some free time, climb on Phou Si Hill for a beautiful sunset over the Mekong, walk to night market

 

 

Day 16: Luang Prabang - Pak Ou cave - Villages (B)
Morning boat trip to Pak Ou cave with stops at the rice wine village, Sa paper village
Afternoon tuk tuk ride to the black smith village and the countryside, then kayaking downstream back to LPQ.

 

Day 17: Departure (B)
Transfer to LPQ international airport for flights to Vientiane or Bangkok and then connecting flight to home.
